AuSable River Canoe Trail

Do yourself a favor and canoe or kayak the best water trail in Michigan. The South Branch of the AuSable River wanders for 14 miles through the heart of a northen Michigan wilderness known as "The Mason Tract". Floating the river is the best way to explore the 4500 acre Mason Tract. The current is 3 to 5 miles per hour and the water depth is 1 to 5 feet.

The Mason Tract trip is 4 to 4½ hours from Chase bridge to Smith Bridge and 5½ hours from the livery. We also offer two shorter trips that are not in the Mason Tract.

Families, youth groups, or anyone visiting Roscommmon or Northern Michigan that would like to explore the Mason Tract go to our contact page for travel directions.

Fall Canoe and Kayak Trips

Any day in September or October is a great time for a canoe trip. The river becomes a quiet setting in the Fall, more often then not you will see many of the animals and birds that live along the river and just a few paddlers or people fishing. The cool weather is refreshing after the 80+ degree days of Summer. Fall temps can range from upper 30's to low 40's in the morning and 60 to 70 by afternoon.

What do you need for a Fall trip?
You should be prepared for any type of weather. A warm sweater for early morning trips is a must item. For canoeing anytime a rain poncho is a great idea. Remember to bring a full change of clothes just in case. Also pack a nice lunch for the longer trips.
